Information in the AIA is only stored locally on your computer, and the Government of Canada does not have access to the information you place into the tool. If you wish to keep your work, please save the data locally for future use by using the 'Save' button. You can reload a previously saved AIA form using the 'Upload JSON File' button.

Algorithmic Impact Assessment v0.10.0

1. What is the Algorithmic Impact Assessment (AIA) Tool?

The AIA is a questionnaire designed to help you assess and mitigate the impacts associated with deploying an automated decision system. The AIA helps identify the impact level of your automation project under the Directive on Automated Decision-Making. Completion and release of an AIA is required by the Directive.

i. How does it work?

The questionnaire asks you around 80 questions related to your business process, data, system design, algorithm, and decision. The results will display an impact level for your automation project and provide information about applicable requirements under the Directive. The questionnaire takes at least 35 minutes to complete. We suggest reviewing the instructions in section 3 of the AIA landing page before you start your assessment.

ii. Where can I find out why my system was classified at a certain impact level?

When you complete the questionnaire, a detailed results page with information about your score will be displayed. Sections 2.2 and 2.3 of the AIA landing page explain how scores are computed and used to determine a project's impact level.

2. Can I save my responses and complete the questionnaire later?

Yes. When you want to save your progress, click on the 'Save' button at the top of the window and save the JSON file to a local folder. If you want to continue where you left off, click on the 'Upload JSON File' button and select your saved JSON file.

All data will be deleted if you click on the 'Start Again' button.

i. Do you store my answers?

No. We don't store your responses and data only remains within your browser's local storage. Feel free to use this tool as many times as you need throughout the design and implementation of your automation project.

3. Can I use the AIA tool to support impact assessments or other initiatives outside the Government of Canada?

Yes, the AIA tool is an open source project released under the MIT License and you are welcome to use it for your own needs. However, we ask that you provide notice of license and attributions, as appropriate.

The tool is updated on a regular basis. You can follow and participate in its development on GitHub.

We encourage you to create an issue on the project site if you find a bug or encounter a problem.
